Protégé

Project Description

Protégé is a freely available, open-source platform that provides thousands of users with a suite of tools to construct domain models and knowledge-based applications that use ontologies. At its core, Protégé implements a rich set of knowledge-modeling structures and actions that support the creation, visualization, and manipulation of ontologies in various representation formats (including the Web Ontology Language, OWL). Protégé can be customized to provide domain-friendly support for creating knowledge models and entering data. Further, Protégé can be extended by way of a plug-in architecture and a Java-based Application Programming Interface (API) for building knowledge-based tools and applications.

A major focus of research concerns the collaborative development of ontologies “in the large”. New extensions to Protégé that support distributed, group-oriented ontology development are under active investigation. For more information about Protégé‘s current advancements, please visit the project’s website.
